Development Coaching

Development Coaching

The path that brought me to development coaching or coaching psychology is not a straight one, but is the only path that felt right for me. It follows the way of integrity with its many twists and turns, sometimes elusive though always true. For this reason, my practice has roots in more than 30 years as a psychotherapist, with many years registered with the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).

My coaching practice is informed by extensive training and experience in the main traditions in psychology, including transpersonal psychology. My practice is also informed by John Whitmore’s GROW Model and later revisions, integrative frameworks, and ‘transpersonal coaching’. This includes mindfulness and contemplative perspectives to increase self-awareness and self-regulation. When I began practising meditation in 1975, I didn’t know that this would inform my later work.

Transpersonal psychology is a ‘psychology of spirituality’. My training in this field (since 1991) brings a holistic framework to my practice that reflects my interest in the whole person. As such, my training includes academic and vocational pathways, including with two of the developers of transpersonal psychology in the UK (Ian Gordon-Brown and Barbara Somers), at the Centre for Transpersonal Psychology, London. This means that I also work with imagery and dreams. It follows on from this that my practice also integrates perspectives from Jungian psychology or depth psychology. My interest in this area grew from an introduction to the work of Carl Jung in a ‘psychology of religious experience’ course, when a post-graduate at Heythrop College, London University. This led me into analysis with a graduate of the C. G. Jung Institute, Switzerland, alongside training as a psychotherapist.

Other training influences on my coaching practice include: New Systems Thinking with Fritjof Capra, Compassion Focused Therapy with developer Paul Gilbert, Professional Positive Neuroplasticity Training with developer Rick Hanson for increasing resilience and wellbeing, Brainspotting with developer David Grand (including Brainspotting for ‘Performance Expansion’ and his post-qualifying five-day intensive training), positive psychology, and years of seminars with the Independent Group for Analytical Psychology and The Guild of Pastoral Psychology. This is complemented by numerous trainings in nature connection and the benefits of this for wellbeing.

My interest areas include: life direction, meaning and purpose, wellbeing, work-life balance, creativity and creative impasse.

These areas are also the focus of my publications, especially Portals into Deep Imagination (2025) which is an immersive wellbeing journey through nature’s year with tales of the Celts.
